SPHERIC UNIVERSE EXPERIENCE INTERVIEW!!!
Monday, 06 August 2007
Chuy: Hey Fred, Vince, Ranko, John and Franck, it’s a real honor for me and the PerfectProg people to ask you some questions, thank you so much for your time and availability, this is the first of two parts of the interview.
1. Which is the Spheric Universe Experience History? Why this name?
Ok – regarding the history, back in 1999, Vince Benaim (guitarist) decided to create a progressive metal band. John Drai (bass player) and Fred Colombo (keyboardist) joined him a few months later, we started covering progmetal classics under the name of Amnesya, and then, for some reason, we left this band in order to end with covers and start actually writing music and compositions of our own. Spheric Universe Experience was born in 2002. Franck Garcia (singer) and Ranko Muller (drummer) joined the band later. We composed our debut album “Mental Torments” in 2003/2004. It’s been released in 2005 under Replica Records and Nightmare Records. We’ve had several live concerts, especially the big opening for the Scorpions in 2005, and then we started writing the songs of our second album “Anima”, which has been released a few months ago.
Regarding our bandname, Spheric Universe Experience may mean we’re living on a sphere, just like the Earth, and we’re surrounded by a huge universe, or we’re unconsciously living within a sphere, the universe is actually spherical, and then what’s beyond it? Anyone can “see” this bandname in different ways and have their own vision of the concept of spheric universe. It’s funny to see people actually brainstorming about S.U.E. before even listening to the music!!
You wanted us to be extensive? Haha!
2. Please tell us about the French Prog School movement
Well, it’s constantly growing! There is no particular “school”, but several bands who have been working very hard since the past 10 years, and it’s starting to pay off. Many are still unsigned, but it is surely going to change, and the French metal and progmetal movement will soon be very active and renown
3. Are there some tour dates this year? It will be great if you come to play to America.
No worldwide tour booked yet sorry! But separate gigs here and there. The most exciting one is ProgPower Scandinavia in Copenhagen on November 9th. Coming to play in America is obviously a dream and it’ll certainly happen in a near future. We’ll keep people updated in our website!
4. Please talk us about the covers of both albums.
The cover of “Mental Torments” was made by Swedish amazing artist Mattias Norén (www.progart.com). He didn’t actually create the cover especially for S.U.E. – he had this unused artwork aside, ready to be sold to a band who would find it cool. Our management (Intromental Management) introduced us to this great graphist and he proposed a few covers to us. When we saw this one, with those aqueous elements and dark blue mood, we fell in love. It just HAD to be the cover of our debut album.
The cover of “Anima” was done by German artist Björn Gooses (www.killustrations.com). Another mad graphist, with incredible ideas! This time we got him work especially for our album. He proposed a few drafts, and then he proposed this cover, and, you know, our lyrics often mention hard psychological times, sad feelings, doubts, etc, however, hope is always there, in both our lyrics and music, with some major-chord themes, and this oasis that’s emerging and spreading within chaos in the cover is the illustration of this immortal bright magical side of life that always comes back after sorrow. It was perfect for “Anima”.
5. You got a lot of elements, technique, velocity, power, feeling, synchronicity, etc. How’s created this supreme prog metal?
Hum, before answering this question we just have to say thank you for those compliments! Our compositions are created through a long, complex brainstorming process. We come up in rehearsal with either a small section, or a whole song, and then we play it, we arrange it, and weeks after weeks, it gets shaped into its final form. But you know, even after recording our songs, we keep arranging them! And when you see us playing live, you’ll discover a few arrangements that are not in the CD!! A song is something ALIVE, and it must be free to have its evolution along with the musicians who play and compose it.
6. From were come the inspiration of the music and lyrics?
Human-related themes are inspiring the S.U.E. members. Actually, we compose a music that’s not only about sound, but it’s also visual music, something you may mentally “picture”, visualize. So we need our lyrics to fit the image created by the music. What inspires us is life, human life. Our lyrics are all about man’s thoughts, reactions and feelings in various situations in the existence. The human conscience is something so complex and rich that we believe it requires complex and rich music. And at the end of the day, the human feelings that we picture in our songs are not so distant, and many people may recognize their own life experience in our songs, they may say “oh... I know this – I’ve been through that – it reminds me of such and such period in my life” etc.
7. Fred, you play amazing solos, scales, rhythms, orchestrations, everything, you’re a top keyboardist, how you get prepared?
Oh, once again, thank you for these words! You know, I just let my imagination play. Being keyboardist means having a harmonic responsibility in a band, and my job is to make the whole thing sound as much beautiful and musical as possible. I use both my classical and jazz background to try and make the richest compositions or arrangements in the S.U.E. songs. Looks like you like it! Great!
8. What‘s the meaning of the recorded voices in French and Spanish that appear in Anima?
Even if we need to sing in English in order to reach as many people as possible, we wanted to pay a tribute to other languages, because all languages are beautiful, like Italian, Japanese, Spanish and of course, French. So we have inserted some spoken sections within the songs. The meaning of these spoken section is related to the specific story of the song they’re in. We’ll put a translation of these sections into English in our website soon!
9. Sidereal Revolution, top song, incredible variety of genres, prog metal, Latin rhythms, electronic music, this song got everything, how you integrate all these stuff?
You know, we’re five different musicians, with influences from jazz to electronic music, from death metal to latin jazz rock, etc. So that’s why several worlds are included in our compositions. And we feel that progressive metal is about playing. It’s a sort of game. We have fun when composing this music. So basically when we composed Sidereal Revolution, we were young, we wanted to have fun, and we just let our imagination travel around the world and around the Sun, because this cyclic piece is about our planet revolving around its star with an outro that’s acutally the intro, over and over again. It’s just a matter of artistic madness and freedom!
10. I love Mental Torments, another top song, what are you thinking when you created this powerful song?
Once again, we simply let our creative instinct play. When we had something good, powerful, rich, that matched with the previous and following part well, we added it, and thus we built this dark castle. It’s all about creating, until everything is said. On this song we had a lot to say. Other songs are much shorter. It’s depends on many artistic elements.
11. Vince, I like so much the constant, repetitive and distorted harmonies, one of your trademarks, were you have been learning music?
12. John, in Heal my Pain the way that you play the bass in the last two minutes of the song is fantastic, which is your musical history? 13. Another master piece, The Key, very intense, the piano is awesome, but like a team, all you are great, how you develop this song? 14. Ranko, in Mental Torments you play incredibly, were you have been studying music?
I had guitar lessons with an individual teacher when I was 13. He’s been teaching me a lot of rock/metal/blues techniques for 3 years. I was influenced by Metallica, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Van Halen. Then at the age of 15 I discovered Dream Theater and I started to work on techniques John Petrucci was using and still uses now. And that’s about it!
Oh thank you very much for the compliment – at last somebody noticed me in this album!! I’ve always been listening to the richest possible music in my life and my passion for the bass guitar is constantly growing since I’ve discovered progmetal and also jazz. It is a very important instrument to me. No please do not neglect bass players!!
The whole concept comes from Franck Garcia’s mind. And there again, we played it, arranged it, and let it grow, until it’s epic enough to match the original concept Franck had imagined.
Alone in my cave or playing with guys since the age of 10. Even if my great pleasure is to play drums and not to study it, I just try to keep my level high enough to play the music I'm supposed to play, I can do more but I think that too much technique kills technique.
15. Franck, your voice is unique; strong and also you sing with a fantastic feeling, How you have been preparing your voice?
Oh thanks a lot for these compliments! I think a voice may have different feelings depending on the musical style, the musician playing with the vocalist and the emotions of the song being sung. Giving some feeling to a voice can be done only if there’s an osmosis between the music and said voice. As far as I am concerned, I just try to give a part of myself using my friends’ musical support, which they pleasantly do. I just have to let my voice fly on a musical path that’s pleasant to my ears. Then regarding power or softness of the voice, heavy singing or clean voice, anger, fear or hope, it’s all about mixing my own vocal colour and technique with a part of “acting”. Each singer must be able to give emotions just like when you are watching a movie.
