Biography:
ANOMALY are a 4-member Dutch band whose style deftly combines prog metal, fusion and classical themes, with a focus on electric guitar and keyboards. Their music often sounds improvised and takes a while to sink in, but their compositions are mature, the arrangements sophisticated, and the overall effect is a perfect blend of beauty and strength – a combination of jazz and metal elements that sounds totally natural. Although hailed as the Dutch LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT, they definitely have a style of their own. The band consists of keyboard player Ivar Pijper and guitarist Rory Hansen who both write all of the bands' compositions, and of John Aponno on bass as well as John Paul Muñoz on drums.
Their only album is an all-instrumental masterminded by (then) 19-year old Pijper, a keyboard player in love with the classical composers (Chopin, Bach, Rachmaninov, Debussy) as well as with the likes of AEROSMITH and QUEEN. These influences form the basis of ANOMALY's music: intricate melodies intertwined with hard-etched riffs, where technical supremacy never goes over the top or looses focus. Hansen plays his rhythm guitar with tight, melodic metal chops, often conversing with Pijper's keyboards – which are very close to fusion but can also be lushly symphonic. Bassist Aponno puts in an excellent performance, alternately plucking away and gleefully going at it 'slap-bass'. And drummer Muñoz (who used to play in a VAN HALEN cover band) impresses with his Portnoy-esque drum style. ANOMALY: a real treat and a brand new way of looking at prog metal.
