Myrath – Desert Call (2010)
– Review by Logan
Lee
Finally! Something new without letting our
progressives roots behind… Myrath has accomplished on their brand new album
(which I am gladly hearing it now for the tenth time) “Desert Call”.
From
the beginning, the amazing introduction song “Forever and a day”, until the
end, the delightfully heavy and full of energy “Shockwave” (not counting the
bonus track) this album is a almost perfect mix of progressive metal, heavy
riffs, excellent melody, eastern folk music influences and, last but not least,
quite impressive music technique. The vocals remind me some great singers of my
heavy metal past and yet, very adapted, to progressive metal style.
Myrath
usually try to pass a message throughout their songs and I suggest you guys
also to focus on their lyrics (I usually enjoy the right combination of lyrics
and melody) while listening to this CD. The most impressive thing about them is
that they are all very young (the oldest is from 1982 and the youngest from 1987)
and have already reached an extraordinary music level; if you hear to this
album not knowing who they are it is very possible that a comparison to some
great (consolidated) prog bands will come to mind. Nevertheless, I know for
sure that this band has a great growth margin.
Technically,
the guitarist and the keyboarder are above standards rates on my opinion but
the others are, as well, great musicians. Before I forget, these guys are not
from Scandinavia, Germany,
Holland or some
other great nation for progressive metal… They are from Tunisia which
gives them an extra compliment, since it is not easy to perform and create
great (not good) quality music on that kind of scenario.
For
these features, the capacity to create a proper atmosphere (that do not hide
their roots) and the ability to innovate and to emerge as the first real
African prog band worthy to mention and to hear, this album deserves a 9/10
even if somehow I know next time will be a 10/10, but for now I strongly
recommend this fantastic work.
